Halloween Minis! THIS OCTOBER!
Hi, I’m Sarah, and Halloween is my favourite.
I love scary things. I mean, as I write this, I’ve also just paused a terribly awesome ghost audiobook about a haunted inn, I’m burning a fall-scented candle, I’m rolling around in a room full of seasonal sweaters, I’m brewing a pumpkin spice latte in my cozy kitchen: I’VE GONE FULL FALL, and I’m so ready for the 31st.
I kept thinking about the photos I have from when I was a kid, the ones of me in costume, with my friends, dressed in costumes that took my mom forever to get me into. I was a black cat, a news reporter (I dressed almost normal, except I walked around with a microphone and recording case and gave obnoxious interviews), a pink dog, and Little Red Riding Hood. What I love the most about so many Halloween costumes is the time and effort put into every beautiful piece - the excitement, and the love, and the memory-making - and this year, I want to photograph that.
SO, I’m offering mini-sessions NEXT WEEK, on Tuesday (23), Thursday (25), Saturday (27), and Sunday (28). Minis are short, sweet & simple - in costume - and $100 (limit of 2 people) - and open to ALL AGES. (Shoot me an email if you want to book more than 2!) 1/2 nonrefundable retainer due upon booking. Sessions are 20 minutes, and include 3 digital files of your choice from a downloadable online gallery (additional files available for purchase.)
To book, shoot me an email through the contact form, and let me know what your day preference is. Spots are limited, so book soon!

YOU'RE AWESOME SESSION GIVEAWAY!!!!!
Sarah Sovereign Photography and Jennifer Foik Photography are running a giveaway from February 5 to May 1, 2018!
We're trying something a little different!
Here’s how it works:
When you book a session with us any time between February 5-May 1, 2018 you get to nominate one person or family who deserves a free session from us. Tell us why you chose this person/family, and what makes them awesome!
An image from YOUR shoot plus your write up will be entered into our You’re Awesome Giveaway Facebook album and we want others to share encouragement via comments to anyone nominated! Every positive, uplifting comment on the picture/about the person you nominated will count as an extra entry in the contest (Only 1 comment counts per person, but feel free to share the love as many times as you want!)
The drawing will be on May 2, 2018! There are two sessions up for grabs, one with Jennifer Foik Photography, and one with Sarah Sovereign Photography (but hey! We’re going to shoot each winner’s session together!)
Here are the fine details:
- To nominate someone, you must book and complete your session prior to May 1, 2018 (Bookings with Sarah Sovereign Photography or Jennifer Foik Photography will count).
- Winner's session must take place in Chilliwack.

2018, New Year New Website!
It felt time to do a big spring clean and relaunch this website, and I'm so ready for it - there are still some things I need to tweak (I know the galleries are huge! - I'm working on figuring those out for sure!) I'm constantly changing and growing as an artist, and I'm really excited to be able to update the portfolio with some of my more recent work, and current editing. I hope that they really highlight how much I love colour, candid moments, telling stories, and making portraits of rad people.
More updates to come over time, but first, this week I'll be working hard like a champ on my thesis. It's a huge project, but I'm so excited about all the different elements of it, especially because it's a photo essay. I've been doing a ton of reading for it, and I feel like my brain is full of so much inspiration - I really can't wait to get deeper into all of it. To do this, one thing I've decided to do is go away for a few days once a month for the next few months. Some space that's totally neutral, quiet, and hopefully tucked away in nature somewhere. I did this in January, and it was so helpful, so I'm going to continue this trend, and just keep writing away in the woods like I'm Bon Iver.
Speaking of - I've slowly started to add more personal work to my portfolio, including an ongoing series called "Spaces I Called My Own", all about revisiting places I remember from when I was a kid, and photographing them through the presence of adulthood. It's on the back burner for now, but I'm excited to get back to work on it.
The project came from this yearning to revisit old familiar places, and recognizing that sort of melancholy feeling that came with realizing I didn't quite belong in them anymore. I've moved a fair amount throughout my life, and I tend to get an urge to travel once or twice every couple of years - almost always somewhere in Canada, almost always somewhere I've been before. Trips back would always include visiting places like my old street and school in Saskatoon, my neighbourhood in Thunder Bay, and even this summer, my old high school before it closed for good. It's really surreal heading back to these places - you feel the overwhelming tug of the past with your feet planted firmly in the present.
I hope you all love this website refresh - once I get this chapter done for my thesis my next step will definitely be my packed and cluttered office.
For now, I'm going to head to bed with a podcast & tea! Email responses and invoices heading out late tomorrow. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
